It’s nearly 3 decades now since my wife and I first met at Slough College. She was into poetry and so it was inevitable we had to visit Stoke Poges Church and we fell in love with the place. The church, and its mesmerising stained glass window, the great yew tree, that famous poem, the quiet adjacent meadows and the beautiful memorial gardens nearby formed a wonderful mix of culture, history, wild and cultivated places. It is one of those rare places where you can feel a very real sense of belonging to it notwithstanding that you may be a traveller passing through. I have no doubt that we will visit it again and walk with Thomas through his landscape with his poem in hand and so may it be with other souls for centuries to come.
